This week I was once again reminded of the fact that I often act in a manner different from my age. My wife (and our volunteer office manager) tell me regularly that I am a 75 year old trapped in a twenty something's body. Though I am not certain about exactly what this designation entails, I have decided to accept it as a compliment.
One such instance of my "older" behavior was during the "Big Game" last weekend. Toward the end of the third quarter, I was starting to get sleepy and I thought the Steelers had control of the game. So, I went to bed. Much to my surprise in the morning, the game had become very interesting in the fourth quarter. I even read some article declaring the game to be the best ever, and I missed it because I was too tired.
However, this old man was able to make it past half-time. During the halftime show, did you see how excited and enthused the people were? At the sight and sounds of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, people were jumping, waving their hands, screaming, and singing with great joy. All this ruckus over... Bruce Springsteen? While I may not be a big fan of The Boss, some people were certainly very excited.
Compare this "worship" of Bruce Springsteen with the way followers of Christ (especially Baptists) approach a "worship service." We claim to be worshiping the One True God, yet we are anything but enthused about it. We are often pretty good at worshiping God in truth, but we certainly lack any sort of response from our hearts. We lack worship from within ourselves; we struggle to worship in spirit.
Perhaps we need to learn to better follow the Psalmist's example, when he said in Psalm 103:1, "Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name."
To this end, please join us for a community worship gathering at First Baptist Church of Aurora at 10:30 this Sunday morning, as we will again look to John 4 to discuss the need to worship in spirit as well as in truth. I hope to see you all!
